What are members doing when they’re not out in the garden? Club member, Rebecca Salzinger, is an accomplished artist and painter. It’s obvious, though, that gardening is a continuous source of inspiration for Becky! Her work will be part of an upcoming show sponsored by the Arlington Artists Alliance from October 23-November 20, 2011 at Cassatt’s Cafe, 4536 North Lee Highway, Arlington, VA 22207, with a reception on Sunday, October 30 from 6-8PM. Added bonus: fellow garden club member, Parvenah Limbert’s artwork will be part of the show as well! If you wish to see more of Becky’s work, it’s on display and for sale at a really neat, creative, artist’s consortium and antique mart, STIFEL and CAPRA, 260 West Broad Street, Falls Church VA. Stifel and Capra also hosts a wine and cheese reception every First Friday of the month for the artists. Everyone is welcome to drop by and enjoy! Congratulations, Becky!

“Landscape: Advanced Compositional Strategies” With Thomas Rainer
A landscape architect, teacher and writer, Thomas Rainer is a passionate advocate for an
ecologically expressive design aesthetic that interprets, not imitates,
nature. His designs create a modern expression of the ground plane
with a largely native palette of perennials and grasses. Rainer
has designed landscapes for the U.S. Capitol grounds, the Martin Luther King Jr.
Memorial and the New York Botanical Garden, as well as over 80 gardens from
Maine to New York. His work has been featured in such publications
as the New York Times, Landscape Architecture Magazine, Home + Design and New
England Home. You can check him out on http://landscapeofmeaning.blogspot.com/
Our meeting is free and open to the public, but please RSVP by using the ‘contact’ button above. The business portion of the Club’s meeting begins at 10 AM. Our Program begins at 11:00AM. Thanks!

Photographer and Club Member Mary Cottrell sent us some photos depicting ‘vertical,’ ‘line’ and ‘mass’ designs that might be of interest to those wanting to delve deeper into the intricacies of floral design. The more you practice different floral designs in your arrangements, the more you’ll be surprised how easy it is to create something special – please yourself! Check out the three designs below:
October 2011 Design of the month is a ‘line’ design. We think you’ll enjoy this design challenge.

Plains Indian Art – The Pioneering Work of John C. Ewers
September 19, 2011
Author: Admin
few days ago I found a box on my front porch covered in plastic wrap to protect
it from a light rain. I inspected it closely and discovered it was sent to me
from the University of Oklahoma Press. Inside I found one of two advance copies
of my Dad’s book, Plains Indian Art The Pioneering Work of John C. Ewers.
This is the book we were working on at the time of his death in May 1997. It
went through a 14 year birthing process. I was actually able to hold it in my
hands, turn its pages, and marvel at the beauty of its layout and design. This
was a totally thrilling experience for me. I definitely soared up to cloud 9
when I read the accompanying letter from the editor-in-chief informing me the OU
Press selected this book to receive The Angie Debo Prize presented biennially to
the author of the most distinguished book about the American Southwest published
by the OU Press. Although this book is not focused entirely on the Southwest,
much of it is, and Dad’s book was selected for this honor. I’m sure my Dad
would have been thrilled as well.
described on page 19. If you find yourself in my neighborhood stop by to take a peek. The main
shipment of books is now en route from the printer. It should be available on
October 15. Advance orders can be placed on Amazon.com.
ANNOUNCING OUR 2011 GARDEN OF THE YEAR WINNERS!!! by Ann Kelly
September 16, 2011
Author: Admin
Arlington’s Rock Spring Garden Club kicked off its mid-September fall meeting with the announcement of the winner of its countywide annual Garden of the Year Award.
The 2011 award went to three winners in
this second annual competition. The high quality of the 49 gardens judged by six judges in two teams made it difficult to select only a single winner. So
this year’s award was shared by three homeowners: by Susan Burrows and Marc
Tohir and by Kevin Ceckowski and Robert Christie for Best Homeowner Designed,
Homeowner Maintained Garden, and by Diane and Howard Melton for Best
Professionally Designed, Homeowner Maintained Garden. The
gardens were judged on site by a set of criteria that included first
impression, functional aspect of design, aesthetic aspect of design including
originality and distinction, implementation of structures and plant materials,
maintenance, and final impression. The judges are members of the Capital Area’s
Landscape Design Council and are part of the National Capital Area Garden
Clubs. “This countywide competition is a great way for our club to promote gardening, county beautification, and membership,” says Sallie McHugh, who chaired the competition this year, and was pleased the entries were from all parts of Arlington County. The 58-year old Rock Spring Garden Club is the oldest garden club in Arlington, Virginia. It has an active community outreach program.
Next year’s Garden of the Year Award competition will start earlier, in March 2012, running through May 31, 2012. The announcement of the winner will take place at the Club’s year-end June meeting. To contact our Club for further information, please use the ‘contact’ button above. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS, AND A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL OUR NOMINEES. ARLINGTON, VA IS A BEAUTIFUL COMMUNITY, THANKS TO GARDENERS LIKE YOU!
