Rock Spring Garden Club is back from summer break with a great line up of programs for our 20/21 club year. We are kicking off September with our first virtual general meeting on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a wonderful program. For those interested in membership and would like to join us on the ZOOM call, please send us an email at [email protected] Prospective new members are always welcome!
We hope to begin our in-person general meetings in January, 2021 with great programs in Design, Botanical Arts, and Horticulture plus a field trip.
And throughout the months our dedicated Civic Development and Conservation Committee along with other club members can be found maintaining our gardens at Rock Spring Park on Little Falls Road in Arlington.
Our September speaker at our first virtual Zoom meeting is a good friend of Rock Spring Garden Club. Kathy Jentz is Editor, Publisher and Founder of Washington Gardener Magazine. Kathy is a life-long gardener from a family of farmers and dedicated gardeners. Currently, she is President of the Silver Spring Garden Club and on the board of several other clubs and organizations. You can read Kathy’s work in the Washington Examiner and Washington Woman in addition to regular guest spots on Channel 9, Channel 4 and WAMU radio.
September PROGRAM: New Plant Development & Evaluation – Do you wonder where all those new plants come from and want to know what is hitting the garden center next? We’ll cover hybridization, cultivar selection, (including native plants & nativars), commercial operation, plant specialist, environmental suitability, test gardens. Plus, plenty of exciting new introductions to shsre that are coming soon to your garden.

Our next general meeting is Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. Guests and potential members are welcome! Our meetings are held at Little Falls Presbyterian Church, 6025 Little Falls Road, Arlington 22207. Do RSVP to [email protected] so we know you’ll be there.
Our speaker for February 20th is Nancy Murphy, who graciously agreed to step forward after our planned speaker, Rob Soreng, was called by the Smithsonian to undertake a plant field mission to South Africa. Nancy has been a member of the National Cathedral Flower Guild for 24 years and the chairperson of the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Flower Guild for 20 years. Nancy also does flowers for wedding receptions on occasion, and she is an avid gardener.
The National Cathedral is renowned for its spectacular floral arrangements and you will learn techniques that are used to create these masterpieces, which can be applied to making your own special arrangements. Nancy will make two identical flower arrangements which we will raffle off at the end of her presentation.
